The Scumfrog Vs David Bowie "Loving the Alien"

Out Now on Nettwerk Productions

Originally from Amsterdam, Scumfrog, also known as Jesse Houk, has been making big waves in the dance community pond. Recently, his remix of Kylie Minogue's new single "Love At First Sight", became Deep Dish's biggest record during this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami.

On the title track, “Loving the Alien”, Scumfrog has turned one of Bowie’s underexposed 1985 tunes into a captivating dance track that is being adopted into DJ sets around the globe. While Bowie’s original version quietly appeared on his top 20 hit album “Tonight”, this Scumfrog remix has discovered large popularity at this years WMC being heard in the sets of Pete Tong, Deep Dish, and Danny Tenaglia. With a nice, upbeat tempo and catchy melody composed of arpegated guitar riffs and cinematic strings, Scumfrog manages to bring a housed up Bowie to the dancefloor with great success. There is one particular rhythmic sample that is used that would allow for a great mix between this track and Humate’s 3.2. If you know the Humate track, you will know what I mean. I can already hear the mash up.

Scumfrog starts out this track with a harder dancefloor sound using snappier drums and grittier samples. He again uses that Humate reminiscent sample that goes ‘Bong, Bong…. Bong, Bong’. Despite similar samples, this is not a dub of “Loving the Alien”. Gritty guitar stabs compliment the sample “8 Days, 7 Hours” as it jabs through the wavey synth pattern. Overall, it is a quality piece to accompany the title track.

The Scumfrog is currently working on a full length album in the studio, and has just finished remixing IIo’s new single, “At The End”. Also watch for a remix he did for Steve Lawler’s “Andante” which will release on Bedrock. “Loving the Alien”, already in the UK on Positiva, will be released in US stores on July 2, 2002 courtesy of Nettwerk America / Positiva.
