Christophe D'abuc "Sweet Dreams / Climbatize"

Out Now on White Label

Now and again you come across a cheeky little slab of vinyl that will grab your attention, and upon initial acquirement of this particular one I didn’t quite know what to expect.

So who is Christophe D'abuc? Is he French? Is he just a cheeky little chappy with a tendency to rework classics from his record collection?... and, most importantly, are the tracks any good. Lets find out.

The a side, Sweet Dreams will instantly become recognizable to you as soon as the percussion kicks in, as this mysterious enigma takes the Eurythmics classic and reworks it into a subtle progressive house cut that remains true to the original whilst adding in some cut up percussion and large claps to great effect. Watch the dancefloor explode when you drop this.

Meanwhile Climbatize starts off with some nice atmospherics before the main riff kicks in and you'll start wondering where you've heard it before. As layer upon layer of sounds roll over each other and the mood builds, eerie stabs, which will become recognizable from the Prodigy classic of the same name, rumble through the speakers. This talented individual has reworked this mother with a big sound system in mind. Little wonder that some djs named Sasha and Digweed have been playing it on the Delta Heavy tour and more recently at Homelands 2002.

So the question remains: Who is Christophe D'abuc? Well that's a mystery I cannot solve for you. However what I can tell you that if you see any copies of this white label floating about, make sure you snap one up as they are very limited and is deserving of any djs box on the strength of Climbatize alone, but both tracks are inspired reworks of two classics from days gone by. Get hunting.
