Patrick Chardronnet "Eve By Day (Remixes)"

Out Now on Connaisseur Recordings

Patrick Chardronnet is a young, but very talented producer from Germany. A fairly new talent in the ever-evolving world of minimal techno, Patrick has released a few of his own 12" singles as well as doing remixes of various tracks, most notably his wonderful mixes of Matrin Landsky's 'FM Safari'. During the past 3 years, he has impressed enough to get his music onto different compilations and into many a DJ's regular sets. Recently I got a taste of the newest 12" from Frankfurt-based Connaisseur Recordings, which featured 3 remixes of Chardronnet's 'Eve By Day'. A great original production on its own, I was anxious to see what the remixes were going to be like.

From the opening seconds of the opening track, I was blown away. Ripperton's 'Lovelee Day Mix' brandishes a menacing bass rhythm which is originally off-beat to the drum track, but moves along beautifully with a sense of direction and grace. At the climax of the track a live bass and guitar come in, bringing the listener further and further into the adventure of sound that this remix is. Definitely the highlight of this release for me and certainly a bold and original track from Ripperton, a guy who also happens to be one half of the Lazy Fat People.

Next up, we have Fairmont's remix, which is slightly less original but nevertheless a quality production. Featuring a long lead-in before the 'Eve By Day' melody kicks in, this track is all about bringing different elements together as time rolls on. Ergo, there is more patience required from the listener here, unlike the aforementioned mix by Ripperton, but this is definitely excellent for pleasing the many different types of minimal techno fans and DJs.

Finally, the last track is 'Ripperton's Epic Mix' and it's certainly a peculiar one. Reminding me of the new Pirates of the Carribean movie, this track is styled as an epic orchestral version of 'Eve By Day'. It's a short one clocking in at only 3:36, and it certainly seems like a fun, exploratory piece by Ripperton. Obviously not a tune for the dance floor, it ultimately seems like a last-minute, experimental addition to this 12" and although interesting, doesn't fit in and is somewhat of an anti-climax for the release.

Nevertheless, despite the minor blemish of the last track, the lengthy feature remixes are certainly high quality productions, especially Ripperton's Lovee Dae mix which is one of the freshest, most original and stunning minimal techno tracks of the year. Ultimately, a dynamite release overall, very deserving of popularity and recommended for purchase.
