Dzierzek & Liousias Present FLING "The Wrongans & Randoms EP"

Out Now on Silver Planet Recordings

In an industry that's unfortunately filled with flash in the pan artists, it's always refreshing to come across an artist that brings something new to the game. What's even more exciting is when you find two of them and their collaboration leaves you wanting more. Such is the case of Luke Dzierzek and Nick Liousias who separately have been making more then a mark of late whether on the DJing circuit or through production work. Luke Dzierzek's 'Echo' has to be one of the standout releases of 2005 and was played by all manner of DJs whether known or unknown while Nick Liousias has been gaining a reputation as solid DJ and has been developing a growing fan base through his extraordinary promo mixes. But it is together, under the guise of FLING, that these two bring something stimulating in sound which can be found in their new EP 'The Wrongans & Randoms' released through Silver Planet.

The first track of the EP, 'Wrongans', begins with a simple drum pattern and then introduces a dirty electro melody that dominates the majority of the tune. As various sound layers are introduced, the track begins to take on a very infectious house feel which is interspersed with what I can only describe as flange based sound effects. These effects are never overdone and are used in such a way as to help build the tension in the tune and highlight the dirtiness of the main riff. And herein lies the beauty of this track and why it's my favourite of the two on this EP. I love that dirty electro sound but too many times I've heard it done so badly that it makes me cringe. On 'Wrongans', that sound, while dominant, is not ridiculously over the top that it drowns out the other melodies that subtly play in the background. On the contrary, it helps draw out the intricacies of those underlying melodies resulting in a very cohesive tune.

Of the two tracks presented, 'Randoms', is the more familiar as it has already been featured on the fantastic 'Renaissance – The Masters Series Part 7' mixed by Dave Seaman. It too, like its predecessor, begins on a drum/electro tip but where 'Wrongans' chose a dirtier path, 'Randoms' deviates with a twangy bass that helps steer the track onto a deeper, more robust angle. The overall concept of this track is much more complicated when compared to 'Wrongans' as there are more melodic chimes and sound effects used in its composition. Much like its companion, it too does not primarily depend on one dominant sound to make the track a whole. Instead, as in this case, that twangy bass is used in a predominant manner to help draw out the other various intricacies involved to achieve the end product. As such, 'Randoms' works well because it is clearly the more dancefloor friendly of the two on this release and one that begs to be heard on a crystal clear sound system.

While structurally quite similar, each track on 'The Wrongans & Randoms' EP however takes a different variation in interpreting the electro house fusion. Some will grumble that from a general perspective this has been done before and, to a point, it has but the way in which both these tunes have been executed separate them from the rest. Overall, a more then satisfying effort from this talented duo and regardless of the polished I found the production work, I can't help but feel that there is much more in store from both of them whether as collaborators or as individuals. I for one will very much be keeping an eye out for their future releases.
