Diamond Dogs Feat Mary Tanning "Nothing Else"

Out Now on Climax Recordings

Over the last few releases, Climax Recordings have taken a turn towards the more dancefloor friendly sounds that we all know and love, with a series of releases that have grown on many and subsequently found their way into many a record box. This latest release comes from Danish producer Jan Mortensen, whom under the name of Diamond Dogs has put together this European style house track called 'Nothing Else'.

On the a-side is the 'U-Facilities & Sciatica Pumping Mix', a chunky breakbeat influenced remix that starts off on a slow footing but soon develops into something deep, dark and delicious. Mary Tanning's off key vocals have a slight overtone that might remind you of Minnie Ripperton, but amidst the tough beats and big synth riffs it works surprisingly well, and will fit well into those more twisted sets that the likes of Steve Lawler are acclaimed for.

Those Global Underground bad boys from Newcastle, 'Trafik' offer up their version of the track on the flip, with their 'To Nothing Mix' a far departure from the a-side mix. The vocal is treated with filtered, rattling over a bed of punchy beats and bubbling effects. However, its the massive acid bassline that creeps in early on that takes this mix to the next level, fading out as the break hits, and the whole track building itself back up slowly before unleashing into a full on acid frenzy. Once again Trafik prove they are kings of the big room, and this mix is the pick of the bunch for me.

Climax have been developing steadily over the last few months, and with a solid lineup of tracks in the coming months the likes of Oko Tek, Daniel Gregory and remixes from such names as Fretwell, Innate and Mara and this is a label you should keep your eye on.
