Bedrock 10 Feature: Part Ten / Tom Middleton

Posted By: Simon Jones on 10 October

As our Bedock 10 multi part artist feature reaches it´s conclusion, Tom Middleton offers his thoughts on the 10th anniversary album and club night, his impressions of the Matter venue and reveals some some background information on his reinterpretation of Bedrock´s ´Forge´, in addition to news of his upcoming projects, including a brand new mix compilation of his very own and some new Lifetracks compositions.

  1. Progressive-Sounds: What was your first experience or association with Bedrock?Tom Middleton: Ever since I first heard ´Lifeline´ many years ago, I´ve had many Bedrock releases in the record box since.
  2. Progressive-Sounds: How would you describe the track or reinterpretation you have presented for the Bedrock 10 album project and how do you feel it compares to the original version of the track? What other tracks from the label would you revisit if given the chance?Tom Middleton: The original version of Bedrock´s ´Forge´ is a deep and epic electro masterpiece, which reminds me of Vangelis´ ´Bladerunner´ soundtrack
I wanted a menacing, pumping bass line, a solid 4/4 kick and arranged the track to build to a real anthemic and dramatic climax.

I took the memorable Organ arpeggio from the original as a harmonic starting point, set a new tempo of 128 and started building fresh beats. I´m very happy with the end result. I wanted a menacing, pumping bass line, a solid 4/4 kick and arranged the track to build to a real anthemic and dramatic climax. Vangelis fans will note the fanfare topline when it kicks back in and the Solina string pads are definitely a nod to an inspirational composer for many of our generation of Electronica producers.
  3. Progressive-Sounds: How did you feel when contacted to be asked to contribute to the 10th anniversary project?Tom Middleton: I am honoured and proud to be part of the celebrations, the 10th anniversary party will be an awesome night.
  4. Progressive-Sounds: What are your thoughts on the new venue Matter where the 10th Anniversary party is being held, and what do you feel a state of the art live music venue such as this brings to the global club scene?Tom Middleton: I visited Matter on the opening night, it´s a breathtaking industrial style space with next level sound (just feel that bass!). I´m looking forward to spinning there for the first time at the 10th Anniversary party!
  5. Progressive-Sounds: What other projects have are you currently involved with and what are your plans for the coming months?Tom Middleton: The ´One More Tune´ compilation I´m putting together for Renaissance is shaping up nicely, it´s an anthology of end of night anthems. I´ve just remixed Golden Girls ´Kinetic´ for the R&S Records compilation ´In Order To Dance´, and have some new Lifetracks compositions in progress.
