Suicide Sports Club "2.20 Girl (Gutterstylz Mixes)"

Out Now on B_Rock

I´ve been a fan of Suicide Sports Club since first hearing Luke Dzierzek´s take of ´I Don´t Know´ on Dave Seaman´s last Masters Series. They offer smooth vocals and an alternative feel with the affluent electronic production I look for from an artist. Once I learned that it was made up of the same pair of Bedrock favorites, Brancaccio and Aisher, that were responsible for ´It´s Gonna Be... (A Lovely Day)´ I was even more impressed. This release of their new ´220 Girl´ features only the Gutterstyle mixes- vocal and dub- but the sound doesn´t suffer too much as Gutterstyle is just another name of Bruce Aisher.

It´s the vocal mix that offers up some excitement as it is incredibly well executed. The vox effects and breathy voice plays over the simple but swelling chord progression bass line and tides of 4th and 5th octave melodic layers move emotionally and energetically. “It´s all so easy on your own” stands out from the vocal lines as the poetic epicenter as the sixteenth notes drill in a varying level of intensity.

The dub mix, however, falls flat. Shamed to be just an after-thought, it is not much more than just the vocal mix missing the vocal. And missing the vocal is exactly what I was; with none of the instrumentation being overshadowed when the vocal was present or taking command now with the opportunity to be center stage. Instead it is maligned to be situation filler- good production to lay down and take up space between real tracks.
