David West "The Hideout"

Despite his relative youth, David West has been a mainstay on the progressive scene for many a year. Carving a reputation as ´Mr Consistent´ isn´t easy. His bold and melodically sublime production prowess has ensured that West has collected an army of high-profile fans along the way.

Tolerant´s latest offering, ´The Hideout´, is a techno masterpiece that is typical of the confidence West habitually showcases towards music-making. A pumping kick drum is joined by a melancholic pad, oozing beauty and rhythm while a side chain assisted bassline drives things along relentlessly. The breakdown reveals West´s classical background as stunning melodic patterns rise to the fore. Always with an eye on the dancefloor, normal progress is quickly resumed as driving techno percussion forces the dancefloor into submission. I never fail to be impressed by West´s ability to juggle progressive melodies with groove and energy. A superb start to the release.

The remix comes courtesy of Ramon Tapia, taking on a techier, more twisted approach. Despite borrowing and tweaking a groovy rhythm from the original, the key melodies are all but completely sacrificed, resulting in a markedly contrasting alternative. Crazy FX and synths evolve throughout the soundscape, while quirky sub bass tones and solid techno beats drive things forward. With a strong emphasis on sheer bassline power and classic tricks to rock the dancefloor, perhaps this track is less suitable for home listening. Having said that, I can certainly see its appeal.

Existing fans and those unfamiliar with David West´s work must hunt down this release. A fantastic original coupled with an effective remix, the package will be at home amongst a plethora of DJs and avid listeners alike. Hot stuff.
