Dawn Of The Electric Music People

Electric Music People is the new label founded by Evolution´s Jon Sutton. With a storied career than stems back over the last decade, we were more than a little curious about this project, so managed to pin Jon down for a few minutes to find out more. Here´s the lowdown:
Progressive-Sounds: Where did the inspiration for the Electric Music People name come from and what is the ethos and idea behind the label?
Jon: The name just came to me one day out of the blue. I guess if you look at all the different kinds of people that enjoy going out and enjoy the music, then you will see so many different types of people all coming together as one. The Electric Music People as it were. The idea behind the label is the same, as there is an open minded policy musically, but obviously all showcasing various types of electronic music.
Progressive-Sounds: The artwork for the label is very unique and eye catching, but compliments the theme of the label perfectly at the same time. Who is responsible for the groundbreaking design?
Jon: The artwork was actually devised by a friend of mine called Kieran Kelly. He´s a very talented artist whom I´ve known for a while. The girl on the sleeve is someone called Cat whom was photographed and then airbrushed to create the Athena style look, and turning her into our first Electric Music person. As time goes on, we will introduce different sleeves featuring other Electric Music people, and hope to make the artwork available as pieces of art on our site, and hopefully each sleeve will stand out on the shelves and capture people´s attention and imagination.
Progressive-Sounds: The first release is the Evolution classic ´Blaster´ which featured on the debut Evolution album ´Unnatural Selection´, and is already finding favour amongst longtime fans and DJs alike at the moment. What other projects do you have lined up for the coming months?
Jon: Obviously there are several Evolution tracks myself and Barry have worked on over the past few months that will no doubt surface at some point, but I´m lucky enough to have a group of supportive friends whom I have material from to release as well. The second release will be a collaboration between myself and Quivver called ´Cold Rush´, but in the coming months there will also be material from Sean Cusick and from Freaky Chakra whom I´m hoping to sign a track from shortly. There´s also a new Bluefish single called ´Gone Too Long´, featuring the vocals of DNote´s Anita Kelsey that is being remixed by Kasey Taylor and some other people for release in the summer, but as I mentioned the music policy is going to be open minded and I´m looking to develop new artists at the same time.
Progressive-Sounds: With the growing digital market, do you plan to embrace this movement with the label at all?
Jon: I think you have to really. Things have changed so much in the past few years, and more so in the last few months that you´ve got to keep your options open. As I´ve already mentioned, the artwork will possibly be available via our web site at some point, and there´s the option to offer the releases as downloads, or perhaps to release Internet only releases or remixes, and this would be done via 3BLM´s forthcoming digital platform.
Progressive-Sounds: With Barry Jamieson recently having branched out via his solo projects Future Funksta and Invisible Inc, in addition to his co-production work with Bill Hamel and Sasha, do you intend to develop some solo projects of your own as well?
Jon: Alongside trying to get the label up and running, I´ve been working on a few things. Collaborating with Quivver is easy as he lives just down the road from me, so it´s easy to find time to work together. I also have a few projects that I´ve been working on with Sean, and plan to work with the boys from Trafik in Newcastle in the not too distant future, so I´ve plenty to keep me busy, that´s for sure.
Progressive-Sounds: What do you hope the label will bring to the market?
Jon: I hope the label´s strong identity and ideas will provide a platform to develop many different types of music, whilst giving opportunities to fresh new stars to showcase their talents and grow alongside some of the more established names. As long as I can put out good music as and when I want to, that´s all that matters to me.
