Bedrock 10 Feature: Part Four / M.O.D.E.

Posted By: Simon Jones on 4 October

Our extensive Bedrock 10 coverage continues with the fourth part of our expansive feature. Having already heard from some of the contributors to the Bedrock 10 album project, we now turn to new production act M.O.D.E who were tasked with remixing the track that is quintessentally the track that defines Bedrock, none other than ´Heaven Scent´.

We find out how they dealt with the pressures of reworking one of the dance scene´s classic tracks and also what the future holds, including details of their label and forthcoming original productions.

  1. Progressive-Sounds: What was your first experience or association with Bedrock?
M.O.D.E:: Our first ever experience of the label by pure coincidence was hearing Heaven Scent, the track that we have remixed on the anniversary album. This was years before we had even started to produce. We were clubbing in Renaissance, the main riff dropped and the roof came off - one of those hairs on the neck moments. One of us ran up to the console and asked who the track was by and what was it called, after which came a 3 month search before we managed to lay our hands on a precious copy of the track. So began our love affair with the label. As for Bedrock nights, they are unique. They are everything people associate with the label: underground, cutting edge, and leaving you wanting more.

  2. Progressive-Sounds: How would you describe the track or reinterpretation you have presented for the Bedrock 10 album project and how do you feel it compares to the original version of the track? What other tracks from the label would you revisit if given the chance?
M.O.D.E:: This was our debut remix as M.O.D.E. and what a song to remix. We feel its a bow to the original hence why we made sure the most important and fundamental parts of the original track remain. Yet at the same time, its a remix that gives the track a different angle. For example, its 126bpm, a lot slower than the original. If we could label the sound of our reinterpretation, it would be deep tech house moving into progressive. The remix has different sections that transcend these genres as we wanted to take the listener on a ride but keep them guessing with the various changes through the mix. As for other tracks we would love to re-work, it would have to be Santiago, Stoppage Time and Rise In. A remix EP of those three would be a great project to work on.

  3. Progressive-Sounds: How did you feel when contacted to be asked to contribute to the 10th anniversary project?
Not many new artists have their debut remix on a label such as Bedrock and even fewer get the chance to remix one of electronic musics biggest track
M.O.D.E:: Honoured, nervous and excited. Not many new artists have their debut remix on a label such as Bedrock and even fewer get the chance to remix one of electronic music´s biggest tracks. There are tunes to remix and TUNES TO REMIX, and this one definitely falls under the latter of the two. Its a classic, a true anthem and you are aware that with a track like this, there is no room for error. Now its completed, we feel that weve done the original justice. Just as important is that we hope people enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed working on it.

  4. Progressive-Sounds: What are your thoughts on the new venue Matter where the 10th Anniversary party is being held, and what do you feel a state of the art live music venue such as this brings to the global club scene?
M.O.D.E:: Having the opportunity to visit a new club is always exciting for us as although we are now making a name within the industry, we come from a clubbing background. We´re fortunate enough to have been to Matter and its spectacular. The sound system is stunning and the layout is superb with rooms for those with all tastes. We´re sure it will follow in the steps of its older sister Fabric as being one of the globes premier venues to see the cream of the worlds DJs. Venues like this can only be good for the scene as they will set the benchmark for other clubs around the world to try and match, maybe in the future to beat. For now, its definitely up there already as one of the best clubs in the world and is a superb place to host this 10th Anniversary Bedrock party.

  5. Progressive-Sounds: What other projects have are you currently involved with and what are your plans for the coming months?
M.O.D.E:: We have a number of different projects on the way. Our new label Mode Music (www.modemusic.netlink opens in new window) has launched and will feature our own original tracks. The debut release After Dark has done amazingly well after support from John, Sasha, Cattaneo and many more, and the second track Lost is due out at the end of October. Then comes our first EP on the label with the tracks Lewis and The End (the latter being a tribute to our favourite club residency), and then we´re hoping to start work on a remix EP for Bedrock. We´re also starting to travel a lot with the DJing which is something we have always dreamed of doing. Its only early days as we only started M.O.D.E. in March 2008 but these are exciting times and we´re looking forward to seeing lots of new places and meeting lots of new friends in the coming months.
