Bedrock 10 Feature: Part Two / Kazell

Posted By: Simon Jones on 2 October

With the 10th anniversary of Bedrocks parties in London looming (being celebrated with an event at new venue Matter), and the upcoming release of Bedrock 10 : Past Present And Future, we are proud to present the second in a multi-part series of features to celebrate the labels anniversary. Having supported John Digweed and Sasha on their Spring Club Tour earlier this year, Kazell has more than proven his status as one of the top DJs in America and is currently working on a film soundtrack for a movie called Rolling as well as several other projects, including a remix for the 10th anniversary album. Read on to find out what he had to say.

  1. Progressive-Sounds: What was your first experience or association with Bedrock?Kazell: I was the manager of Global Grooves record store in Santa Monica when the first pressings of ´Heaven Scent´ arrived in the US. I´d played with John a few times prior to that and was already very familiar with his style of music. I´d loved his earlier productions, in particular the Digweed and Muir mix of Marco Polo. Of course the record sold out that day and went on to become a huge anthem that I know from experience is still requested to this day.
  2. Progressive-Sounds: How would you describe the track or reinterpretation you have presented for the Bedrock 10 album project and how do you feel it compares to the original version of the track? What other tracks from the label would you revisit if given the chance?
I decided to keep it dark and deep in contrast to the original and pushed forward in a more techy direction. Id say the results are brooding and stripped back
Kazell: After a few attempts on the "Chilling Moments" remix, I decided to keep it dark and deep in contrast to the original and pushed forward in a more techy direction. I´d say the results are brooding and stripped back, which seemed right in the current musical climate. I loved the original mix as well though; it was a great uplifting track with a good amount of sophistication and depth. There were quite a few tracks I wanted to have a go at when I first heard about the project particularly the early Science Dept release; I´m really looking forward to hearing Danny Howells´ 2008 Mix.
  3. Progressive-Sounds: How did you feel when contacted to be asked to contribute to the 10th anniversary project?Kazell: As I´ve been a fan of Bedrock since its inception and own almost all the releases it was an honour to be a part of the Anniversary release.
  4. Progressive-Sounds: What are your thoughts on the new venue Matter where the 10th Anniversary party is being held, and what do you feel a state of the art live music venue such as this brings to the global club scene?Kazell: As I haven´t been there its hard to comment but if its run and designed by the Fabric crew, I´m sure it´s amazing.
  5. Progressive-Sounds: What other projects have are you currently involved with and what are your plans for the coming months?Kazell: I´m putting the finishing touches on the Soundtrack for a film, "Rolling", due for release next year, producing a track for an LA band "Rushmore" and a new single and remix for John Graham´s Boz Boz label as well as a host of DJ Gigs.
